Ad For Weight Loss : Whey Protein, Amino Acids May Boost Fat Loss

Adding essential amino acids and milk serum protein to a weight loss plan seems to increase fat loss, according to new research.

The study was done in older and obese adults, but the strategy can also work for younger adults, says researcher Robert Coker, PhD. He is an associate professor of Geriatrics at the University of Arkansas for medical sciences, small rock.

In your new study, it compared two types of meal replacements. One was a protein replacement without essential amino acids. The other was a meal replacement with essential amino acids and whey protein.

Replacement with Whey won.

"Essential amino acids, included as part of a meal replacement along with the milk serum protein, improved the synthesis of the muscle and led to a greater fat loss," he says.

Both groups lost about 7% of their total body weight. But the amino acids and whey group have lost a greater percentage of fat for the slim tissue.

Increase fat loss during a weight loss program translates into a better and healthy body composition, experts say.

Coker studied 12 men and women obese, all 65 to 80 years of age.

They were assigned to the meal replacement group or meal replacement with amino acids and milk serum group. All were distributed 1,200 calories per day.

Coker evaluated the 11 who completed the eight week program to see the effect of each plane in fat and muscle.

Meal replacement with whey and amino acids did not preserve the slim muscle tissue much better than the other meal replacement.

This boosted fat loss. At the beginning of the study, the alone meal replacement group was about 39% fat; At the end of the study, they on average 37.5% fat. The group receiving replacement meals with amino acids and serum had 41.8% body fat at the beginning, but 36.3% at the end.

Body weight losses were similar - both groups started about 200 pounds and finished in an average of 185.

The whey and amino acid add-in "increased muscle metabolism, and this may have triggered a greater reduction in body fat," says Coker.

The same strategy could help younger adults? "I think the answer potentially is yes," says Coker. His study seemed only for those at age 65, and they were obese. But other surveys indicated that the approach could help younger people, he says.

Losing excess body fat is an important goal, says Coker. Among other effects, it promotes inflammation and insulin resistance, making the body less apt to use insulin effectively.

The product studied by Coker is not available to the public.

The study was supported by a concession of innovation research of small NIH and other subsidies. The small business grant was administered through Healthspan, which makes a milk serum protein product. Coker and other co-authors were offset by Healthspan as consultants for the concession.

Whey protein for fat loss: perspective The new study echoes some of the discoveries of a previous study of Joy Festedt, President and CEO of Frést Inc., a consulting firm for clinical trials and other research.

In her own study, she discovered that serum protein supplements helped losing adults to lose more weight and more body fat than those who are not in supplements.

She checked the new search for webmd. The new study has limitations, she says. It was only eight weeks and there were only 11 finalists.

Even so, they went beyond her research in a way. "They really biopsy the muscle," she says, to evaluate the effect of the two approaches.

The product studied by the Coker Group is not yet available, it says, but many serum protein supplements are sold on the counter.

To this day, research suggests that whey protein can increase fat loss while helping to keep muscle mass typically lost as pounds are spilled, says Fruyt.
