Want to lose weight and keep it for good? A low-fat diet can be the best long-term bet, according to new searches.

The news is based on a study of more than 2,700 members of the National Weight Control Registry, which has been established for 10 years and consists of people who spilled at least 30 pounds and maintained their new numbers for at least a year.

Suzanne Phelan, Doctor, Brown University Medical School and colleagues screened weight loss strategies and long-term results of members of the registry enrolling in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003.

The researchers compared behavioral and eating changes from the members of the registry to evaluate the effect of recent diet trends, such as the low carbohydrate mania of recent years, in weight maintenance.

Various trends stood out.

The calorie intake was approximately the same - about 1,400 per day - for the 1995-2003 studied members. However, the most recent trends showed that some younger members have passed more of these calories in fat and dedicated less to carbohydrates.

From 1995 to 2003, the daily percentage of fat calories increased from 24% to 30%. In addition, saturated fat intake rose from 12.3 to 14 grams per day, and calories of carbohydrates fell from 56% to 49%, the researchers say.

The proportion of limbs eating a low carbohydrate diet (less than 90 grams of carbohydrates per day) rose from 6% to 17%.

In contrast, the first participants of the registry reach low fat diets, low calorie and had high levels of physical activity, the researchers say.

This may have been a better strategy, since eating more calories, boosting fat intake (or cutting carbohydrates), and reducing exercise were all connected to recovered weight.

"Only a minority of successful losers consumes low carbohydrate diets," says researchers.

"While the baseline diet is not related to recovering, individuals who have increased their fat intake over 1 year recovered the highest weight, suggesting that the continuous consumption of a low-fat diet is important for long-term success. "

Phelan's team reported their discoveries in Las Vegas at the US Association for the study of the annual scientific meeting of obesity.
