What popular diet plan helps you lose more Weight: the Atkins diet, the Barry Sears zone diet, the oriental diet or the learning program?
To answer this question, the researcher at the University of Stanford Christopher D. Gardner, PhD, and colleagues randomly attributed 311 women overweight and obese to one of the diets. The idea was to see what worked best for weight loss: a very low-carbohydrate diet (Atkins), a low carbohydrate (zone) diet, a low-fat diet and high carbohydrate (learn, based on guidelines US), or a very high diet on carbohydrates (ornes).
Gardner's team has ensured that women understood diets, having an enthusiastic nutritionist teach them their program designated in eight weekly sessions. Then they practically left them to follow the diet books for the rest of the study of the year.What happened?
At the beginning of the study, the mean weight of women was 187 pounds. All of them, Gardner says, needed to lose at least 15 pounds - and many needed to lose 40 to 80 pounds.
After a year, some of the women in each group lost up to 30 pounds. Twice more lost it in the Atkins diet group as in any other group. Overall, here is how much women lost in the four diets:
- Atkins diet - 10.4 pounds on average
- Learn - 5.7 Average Libra

- Zone Diet - 3.5 Average Libra
The difference in weight loss among women attributed to the Atkins diet and women assigned to the zone diet were statistically significant. The other differences were not - which means they could be finding chance.
Gardner and colleagues report the discoveries in the March 7 edition of the American Medical Association magazine.

What does the results mean? This depends on who you ask.
Gardner says that the study highlights how difficult it is that people follow the zone and the ornes diets on their own.
It points to two American diet trends: we are eating more and more calories. And we are eating more and more refined carbohydrates in the form of sweets, soft drinks and snacks.

It suggests that the Atkins diet offers a simple way to neutralize these trends.
"Dr. Atkins just said," Do not eat any refined carbohydrate, period. "And the carbohydrates you eat should be good and healthy carbohydrates," Gardner tells WebMD. "And this is very attached to the trend that is happening in the US obesity epidemic. Maybe that's why the Atkins diet was a little more effective."Jeff S. Volek says Gardner's discoveries extend and confirm earlier surveys.
"OS attributed to the Atkins diet had less carbohydrate intake than the other three groups. Therefore, it is valid to conclude that the differences are due to carbohydrate intake," says Vollek. "We are trying to say that they are carbohydrates that are directing the physiology of weight loss and that we should talk more about carbohydrate restriction than about fat restriction."
But this interpretation is not unanimous.
"What this study showed, once again, is how difficult for people to lose weight, no matter what the approach," Psychology Professor of Yale Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, says WebMD.
BrownNell wrote the Learn Weight Loss Program Manual. Nutrition is only a part of the program, which also aims to help people change interpersonal relationships, improve physical activity, change behaviors and change attitudes.
"The people who try to follow the Atkins diet lost about 10 pounds and others lost about five pounds. No one will be terribly excited about those five extra pounds, since where they started to be in 187 pounds," he says. . "The message is not that atkins is better; it is that nothing works very well for people who are already obese."
Creator Zone Diet Barry Sears, PhD, notes that none of the groups in the Gardner study followed their designated diet plans.
"These results have no meaning in the real world or in the world of controlled studies," says WebMD. "This is one of the first times Dean [Orien] and I will agree. Even if Bob Atkins were here, he would say," This is not my diet. "You have the three tenors singing together: 'This is not my diet.'
