Monday, (Health News) - Obese people who carry a lot of excess fat around their waist are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, new research warns.

The finding also highlights another harmful health effect of obesity. Low levels of vitamin D were linked to poor bone health, as well as increased risk of respiratory infection, autoimmune disorders and heart disease.

"The strong relationship between the growing values of abdominal fats and lower levels of vitamin D suggests that individuals with greater comprises are increased risk of developing disability, and should consider having their levels of vitamin D verified," said the author of the RACHIDA RAFIQ study.

Rafiq is a doctoral student at the Medical Center of the Vu University and Medical Center at Leiden University in Holland.

His team is scheduled to present the discoveries at a meeting of this European Endocrinology Society in Barcelona, Spain.

The results result from a data analysis collected by the Dutch epidemiology of the study of obesity. Connected higher levels of abdominal fat at an additional probability of low levels of vitamin D between men and women who are obese.

Among obese men, higher levels of total fat were also linked to lower levels of vitamin D. The same link was not found for obese women.

Among the obese women, however, larger amounts of hepatic fat were attached to low vitamin D, a discovery is not seen among obese men.

It is not clear, however, if the low vitamin D causes people to store abdominal fat or if excess belly fat in some way triggers vitamin D levels to fall, Rafiq said. That will be a focus for future study, researchers said.

"Due to the observational nature of this study, we can not draw a conclusion on the direction or cause of the association between obesity and vitamin D levels," Rafiq said at the News Meeting. "However, this strong association can point to a possible role for vitamin D in storage and abdominal fat function."

The research presented at meetings is considered preliminary until it was published in a pair revised magazine.
