Study: Calcium No Help in Fat Loss - Milk Fat Loss

Eating calcium rich foods can make a good body, but calcium will probably not help you lose weight, new search shows.

In a rigorously designed study to examine the issue, researchers did not find evidence that calcium supplementation influenced energy expenses or fat burning in overweight people whose regular diets were disabled in the mineral.

Studies of widely disclosed animals and humans who suggest a role for calcium in weight loss led to a multimillary advertising campaign by promoting three portions of dairy dairy by slogans such as "milk their diet. Lose weight!", Lose weight! "Lose weight!"

The new study was performed in an effort to confirm or refute the discoveries in these previous studies, Metabolic physiologist Hilary Green, PhD, Nestlé, says WebMD.

"There was no evidence in this latest research to suggest that calcium helps people burn more fat through the mechanisms they have been tested," she says.

Calcium and weight loss The study of 20 weeks, conducted by researchers at the University of Lausanne and the Swiss Research Center, included 10 persons overweight or obese identified before recruitment, whose regular diets were low in calcium.

Study participants were randomly assigned to be data from placebo or 800 milligrams of milk calcium daily for two periods of five weeks, separated by a 10-week washing phase.

Four weeks in the phases of study supplementation, the researchers performed a battery of tests designed to examine the impact of the calcium in fat metabolism.

The tests did not reveal differences between people taking placebo and calcium in any of these measures, including energy expenses, fat oxidation and plasma fatty acid concentrations.

In addition, the expression of seven major metabolic genes in adipose tissue biopsy was not affected by calcium supplementation.

In an Annex Editorial, the University of the Copenhagen Nutrition Researcher ARNE ASTRUP, MD, writes that the study makes a strong case against the hypothesis that the routes controlled by calcium in fat tissue help regulate body weight.

But it concludes that there is still good evidence indicating a role for dietary calcium in weight regulation.

The study and editorial study appear in the October issue of the American newspaper of Clinical Nutrition.

Greg Miller, PhD, which is a spokesperson for the National Council of Leiter, tells WebMD that the study addressed only one of the various theories about calcium and weight control.

"There is a good body of evidence that supports a relationship between calcium intake, dairy ingestion and weight regulation and body fat," he says. "What we are trying to understand now is what mechanisms or mechanisms are involved and under what conditions they have effect."

It points out that the study did not address the role of calcium rich foods and protein in appetite control. New research also suggests that calcium can turn on fat and decrease its absorption of the intestinal tract.

But the advertising of the council of Lairy no longer makes the claim that eating dairy foods leads to weight loss. Miller confirms that the campaign of 3 to days and other promotional ads now concentrate on the role of dairy foods in maintaining a healthy weight.

At the beginning of last year, the Federal Trade Commission and the FDA expressed concern about weight loss claims made in the ads, but Miller says the decision to change the focus of weight loss for weight regulation was entirely voluntary.

"Our Marketing Reach told us that consumers were tired of hearing about the diet and our current marketing reflects that," he says.
