(Washington) - Numbers on scale used to be the standard gold measurement of obesity. Then came the body mass index or BMI - a proportion of height and weight currently used to determine the healthy body weight. But now a new study weighs and suggests that simple body fat measurements can be better. Some experts believe that the percentage of body fat can be a more precise indicator of good health than BMI.

New research published in the September edition of the American newspaper of Clinical Nutrition Links BMI for corresponding healthy levels of body fat, apparently for the first time. "We have discovered that, based on BMI, we measure ... percentage of body fat, approximately a quarter of the subjects we evaluated were mixed," says COAUTHOR STEVEN B. HEYMSFIELD, MD, deputy director of the research center Obesity in St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York.
