Weight-Loss Surgery Alternative? - Hips Fat Loss Exercise

A new "pacemaker" deployed in the stomach can offer obese people another alternative of surgery. The first results of the stomach pacemaker show that most patients lose a significant amount of weight.

Researchers say that pacemaker of the stomach could replace traditional weight loss surgery in some obese people.

The pacemaker of the stomach - known technically as the implantable gastric stimulator - helps people feel full. And the first results show that 80% of patients lose weight after they have the device deployed.

The pacemaker of the stomach is placed in place through laparoscopic surgery - where surgery is performed through various small holes in the abdomen, rather than a large opening. An electric lead is deployed on the stomach wall and is connected to an electrical programming unit that is inserted under the skin of the abdomen.

Exactly how pacemaker do stomach helps people lose weight is unknown, says Scott Shikora, MD, assistant teacher of surgery at the Medicine School of Tufts University.

This makes people feel earlier, but researchers do not know if this is caused by stimulation of nerves, hormone inhibition, or stimulation of the stomach muscle itself, he tells WebMD.

However, the stimulator offers a new approach that does not change gastrointestinal anatomy - as in traditional weight loss surgery - and has shown to be safe in 450 patients around the world, according to researchers.

Shikora and Michael Tarnoff, MD, presented his research at the US Association for the study of the Annual Obesity Meeting.

In your study, the stimulator was surgically placed in 30 men and women - mean age 39 - which were over 100 pounds above weight. The study was funded by Transneuronix Inc., the manufacturer of the implantable gastric stimulator.

Two weeks after surgery, generators were activated. All 30 patients were successfully deployed with the device without complications. Electrical parameters were adjusted for patients based on their individual responses.

The results were available for 15 patients. Of these, 80% lost weight after about 10 months. On average, the amount of weight loss was 19% of excess weight.

Other findings include:

  • A 15% drop in appetite before meals
  • An increase of 60% in fullness between meals
  • A 90% increase in satiety at the end of a meal

The stimulator system can evolve into a low risk and effective alternative to the currently popular weight loss surgery procedures to treat obesity, Shikora and colleagues complete.

but it is not likely to replace weight loss surgery in most people.

For some patients, the stimulator is as good as other types of weight loss surgery, but overall will probably be less effective, says Shikora. "You are negotiating a bit of weight loss for security, since [the stimulator] does not change the gastrointestinal tract in the way other procedures do."

According to Shikora, a screening algorithm that can accurately predict who this procedure will work is currently under development.

"The screening algorithm was found to separate non-responders' responders, and responders had very comparable weight loss to other procedures, although this is still investigative," he says.

"We are doing what we expect to be the fundamental study in this winter involving approximately 120 patients in five or six research centers. If this demonstrates good results, we will probably get FDA approval within the next two pairs of years. , he says.
