Is Avo Good For Weight Loss - Weight-Loss Surgery Good for Obese Teens' Hearts
For the study, the researchers traced 242 adolescents for three years after they have weight loss surgery.
"This is the first large-scale analysis of change predictors in the risk factors for cardiovascular disease among adolescents after bariatric surgery," said the main author of the study, Dr. Marc Michalsky. He is a surgical director of the health center healthy and nutrition at the Children Nationwide Hospital in Columbus, Ohio."The study demonstrated anticipated improvement and reduction of cardio-metabolic risk factors, offering convincing support to bariatric surgery in adolescents," explained in a version of the hospital news.
Before surgery, 33% of adolescents had three or more factors that increase the risk of heart disease. Risk factors included high pressure, high levels of blood fat, problematic levels of blood sugar and systemic inflammation.
However, however, three years after surgery, this number dropped to only 5%, the discoveries showed.People who were younger at the time of their surgery tended to do better in terms of eliminating the risk factors for heart disease, "suggesting that there may be advantages in being subjected to bariatric surgery before, even among adolescents," said Michalsky.
Patients who had a lower body mass index (a measure based on height and weight) before surgery has also done better on reducing the risk of heart disease. And, girls improve than boys, researchers have discovered.
The study was published online January 8 in Pediatrics. The research was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and RIM and Digestive Diseases and RIM and was held in five clinical centers in the United States.
