Melatonin supplements may not ease the sleep misfortunes caused by Jet Lag, change work or health problems, according to a new study.
melatonin is a hormone made by the brain. Helps regulate the cycles of sleep and vigil. How people get older, they make less melatonin. Melatonin supplements are dietary supplements, which are not maintained for the same standards as the medications prescribed by the US government.
Researchers from the University of Alberta from Canada revised the studies published in 1999 to 2003. They have discovered that taking melatonin supplements did not help people with sleep disorders fall as early or sleep better - at least not in the studies who reviewed.

The researchers have verified 13 electronic databases for studies on melatonin and sleep disorders resulting from causes such as medical problems, misuse of sleep substances and disorders caused by the lag jet, nightlife styles and change work. They also researched the summaries of meetings of associated professional societies.
Here is what they discovered:
- In 6 essays, totaling 97 people, melatonin was not found to help people with health-related sleep disorders fall asleep faster.
- In 9 attempts, totaling 427 people, melatonin was not found to help people with sleep problems due to jet lag, late hours or change work falls faster.
Melatonin seemed to be safe, but the studies were quite short, so the researchers did not attract steady conclusions about it. They were also not thrilled by the quality of the studies they found.
Previous searches on melatonin were mixed. In November 2005, a small study suggested taking melatonin before the east journey can relieve the jet lag. In March 2005, another review of Melatonin research discovered that melatonin supplements can be modestly effective in the treatment of insomnia.
Other studies of melatonin are needed, and these studies should be well designed, write buscemi and colleagues.
