Side Fat Loss - Side Effects From One Weight-Loss Surgery Method
Wednesday, (Health News) - While most people who go through a kind of weight loss surgery say their well-being has improved, high side effects and hospitalization rates too They are reported, a new study finds.
Roux-en-en-en gastric bypass surgery reduces the size of the stomach to a small purse. This bag is attached directly to the small intestine, which affects how the digestive tract absorbs food, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Diseases and RIM.
Research completed in more than 1,400 people in Denmark that were submitted to Roux-en-Y surgery between 2006 and 2011 showed that only 7% reported the well-being reduced after the procedure.
But 89% of patients reported one or more side effects such as abdominal pain and fatigue almost five years after surgery, and 29% of patients were hospitalized, the study found.
Sixty eight percent of patients sought health care due to their symptoms. The most common reasons for looking for health care were abdominal pain (34 percent), fatigue (34%), anemia (28 percent) and gallstones (16%), study authors said.
Patients more likely to have symptoms after surgery were women, smokers, those under 35 years, those who were unemployed and those with symptoms before surgery. Patients more symptoms have, lower than quality of life.
The study was published online January 6 in Jama Surgery magazine."The focus on [quality quality] among patients with many symptoms may be necessary, since these patients are at risk of depression. The development of new weight loss treatments with less risk of subsequent symptoms should be a High priority, "Leading study Dr. Sigrid Bjerge Gribsholt, from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and colleagues wrote.
But a specialist in U.S. noted that there were some warnings for the discovery.
Patients were not compared against a control group, said Dr. Mitchell Roslin, head of Obesity Surgery at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
Roslin also said that the newest types of weight loss surgery are being used more often, and these are "procedures that will provide better long-term results" than roux-en-y.
