Most of all have heard the message in eating healthier food, but now researchers are becoming an eye for our buildings, highways, and even our cities to try to find ways to help Americans to be less - well - lazy.

Policymakers and city planners are becoming increasingly worried that suburban expansion is forcing people to spend a lot of time in their cars. Relatively few cities have accessible paths to ride a bicycle or walk, or just places to go out and play. As if it were an effort to prevent physical activity, developers of many new subdivisions do not even install the sidewalks.

Meanwhile, 66% of American adults now qualify as overweight, and one-third of them is obese, according to CDC figures.

"The development of suburbs has only evolved in the context of any knowledge about their health impact," says Elias Zerhouni, MD, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "We can no longer do this in the 21st century."

The problem, say that experts are that the American environment has changed very fast since industrialization to our genes to achieve. The old DNA designed to help us gain weight in the rinse times now is overloaded by a modern high-fat and high calorie diet and a lot of convenience we can never expect to burn all those excess calories.

Patricia M. Like, a planner with the Florida transportation department in Jacksonville, says real estate developers rarely consider the health impact when designing communities for maximum efficiency. In his area, children rarely walk to class more because schools are built "in the middle of nowhere."

Large streets - often without sidewalks - Connect the secluded and closed developments of housing with shopping malls and other commercial centers away. The only way to make the trip is with a car exercise free.

"We are designing for the hardware. We are not projecting for humans," says WebMD at a meeting in the artificial environment and obesity sponsored by NIH.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson urged corporate America to help fight the obesity epidemic making easier offices, cities and suburbs of exercising.

He said that health advocates should help "convince city planners to provide safe streets for children's bicycle and safe streets for people to walk.

"All road being built - you should be able to walk or ride a bike in it," he said.

Researchers are beginning to look for ways to exercise a convenient part of daily life in US cities. This means more bike paths, walking trails and best layouts that can take a 20 minute ride almost so easy (although much more enjoyable) 10 minutes by car.

James Hill, PhD, Co-founder of AmericaOthemove.org, says he wants to see small steps to get the most active people without compromising American way of life. It reminds people that 2,000 extra steps per day burns 100 calories - enough long term to avoid weight gain. More sidewalks and more places to play would help, he says.

Hill also has some new ideas. He suggests ask Wal-Mart and other great stores to offer discounts for people who take 2,000 or more steps while they are in the store, as measured by a pedometer. Buyers receive their exercise and retailers receive bargain hunters strolling through the hallways.

"We look for ways to engineering physical activity out of our lives," says Hill, pediatric professor of the center of the University of Colorado Health in Denver. As proof he points to the ubiquitous drive-throughs and even shows the members of the audience a slide of a health club with an escalator that leads to the door.
