July 2006 - Traditional Mediterranean diets including nuts and olive oil can help protect the heart into those in high-risk diseases.

This news comes from Ramon Struch from Spain, MD, PhD, and colleagues. Struch works at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Barcelona Hospital Clinic.

The Struch team studied 772 adults at high risk of heart disease. Participants complied at least one of the two criteria:

  • Diabetes type 2
  • 3 or more risk factors for heart disease: smoking, high pressure, high levels of LDL ( "Bad") cholesterol, low levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol, family history of heart disease and overweight IMC (body mass index).

Participants were from 55 to 80 years (mean age: 68) and 90% were overweight or obesity, based on BMI standards. None was known to have heart disease, severe chronic disease or drug addiction or alcohol.

Researchers randomly designated participants spend three months in one of the following diets:

  • low content diet Fat limiting all types of fats
  • Mediterranean diet with free walnut supplies, almonds and hazelnuts
  • Mediterranean diet with free virgin olive oil supplies

Mediterranean Beats Low-Fat Diet

A nutritionist taught each of the Mediterranean diet groups on his designated diet and from shopping lists and recipes. Researchers also provide olive oil for a group of Mediterranean diet and nuts, hazelnuts and almonds for the other Mediterranean diet group.

This was a very large advantage compared to the low-fat diet group. These participants only have a low-fat diet brochure based on American cardiac association guidelines from 2000. They have not received any classes, shopping lists or recipes.

Diet results

It is often difficult to make people fulfill dietary studies, noticing researchers. Here is what happened in your study:

  • Those in the low-fat group have only triggered a little fat from their diets.
  • All 3 groups began to eat more vegetables, legumes, fruit and fish. They also cut meat, sweets and dairy products.
  • All 3 groups cut into saturated fat (olive oil contains unsaturated fat).
  • The 2 groups of Mediterranean diet cut cholesterol consumption.
  • Nut eaters added more fiber and ate less carbohydrates.
  • Weight maintained stable in all 3 groups.

Compared to the low-fat group, the two groups of Mediterranean diet had greater improvements in blood pressure, insulin resistance (a problem that accompanies or precedes type 2 diabetes), inflammation markers and cholesterol levels and other lipids (blood fats).

Researchers recognize that the low fat group may have been at disadvantage, since they did not succeed both training at the beginning of the study.
