The CDC estimates that half of adults try to lose weight in any year, with younger adults more likely to make the effort, followed by middle-aged adults and older adults. Common ways to pour extra pounds include healthy eating, exercise and intermittent fasting.

But for some, there is another path that many can consider a last resort: weight loss surgery.

. Spencer Kroll, MD, PhD, an internal medicine specialist in New Jersey, says "people typically opt for weight loss surgery after failure of various diet programs and sometimes medication therapy."

Jeannie Boyer, a licensed nutritionist at Mount Pleasant, SC, says others chose surgery to help solve or improve diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

"Some of these conditions, such as diabetes and insulin treatment, make weight loss through diet and exercise very difficult, and that is why surgery can be ideal," she says.

Even if it seems that people opt for frustration surgeries, he says, "This should be considered only after wearing other options, such as significant and sustainable dietary modification."

Also, it urges people to "review various weight loss strategies with nutritionist, change their lifestyle and increase physical activity to increase your metabolism and encourage weight loss."

How To Choose The Right Weight-Loss Surgery

Types of weight loss surgery

In a situation where you may have tried all other alternatives to lose weight, surgery can be your best bet. But what will it be?

A recent study conducted by the University of Michigan examines the two common types of weight loss surgery: gastrectomy of the sleeve and gastric bypass.

"Mango gastrectomy is an easier surgery [because] only the stomach itself is reduced in size," says Kroll. Basically, a part of the stomach is removed, making it smaller.

gastric bypass, which [involves] several surgical techniques, involves skirting the stomach so that the esophagus is directly connected to the delicate intestine, "says Kroll.

In other words, the stomach has no more food entering, but it is arrested separately to the intestine to provide digestive secretions.

VS mango gastrectomy. Gastric Bypass: What's safer?

Before discovering that it is safer, Ryan Howard, MD, author of the University of Michigan study, says: "It is really important that patients understand the risk of issues such as death, complications and hospitalization after these two procedures."

Howard, a general surgeon, informs patients who understand what they are for helps to inform the decision on what kind of bariatric surgery to choose from.

He considers that the sleeve gastrectomy is safer, although "does not convolve so much weight loss."

However, just because it is safer does not mean that you should not consider other factors.

"If a patient has many comorbidities and a bypass will pay for a better clinical benefit, maybe this risk is worth it," he says.

A recent study that followed patients with bariatric surgery for 5 years have found that mango gastrectomy has a risk of mortality, complications and long-term reinterproving, but a higher surgical revision rate.

Complications

Complications of bariatric surgery are generally rare. The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery reports the risk of dying of weight loss surgery is less than removing biliary vesicle or hip replacement.

Kroll says the mortality rate of 30 days for patients with sleeve gastrectomy is 0.08%, while that of patients with gastric bypass is 0.14%.

Although these complications are rare, Kroll says there are scratches of blocks due to cicatricial tissue and infection.

Outlook and Recovery

"After having bariatric surgery, you have a new opportunity. With regard to weight, you can reduce the size of your body," says Susan Zilberman, coach of eating mental body in New York.

But this is not the ultimate goal. If you can not deal with what caused excessive weight, it will return in a matter of time.

Zilberman says that the "basic emotional concerns that created the weight are still there. To keep the weight off, it is crucial to reach a place of self-understanding around your relationship with the food."

Zilberman incorporates his coaching skills while working with bariatric surgeons, nurses and nutritionists.

She says that a way to heal is with a conscious diet.

"Conscious eating helps you disengage from usual and unsatisfactory behaviors. Instead of thinking about food and eating, you release your energy and can focus on living your ideal life."

"The cure of surgery is a process. For an ideal healing, it is important to follow the guidelines of your bariatric team, think of self-care and stress reduction, and focus on self-acceptance at the present moment."
