For years, we were informed to eat a low-fat diet to protect us from heart disease.

But a new report says these guidelines - which recommend keeping fat at 30% or less of 10% daily and saturated fat calories or less - were not supported by solid research when decades were emitted ago.

U.S. Public health officials made the recommendation in 1977, and 6 years later those of U.K. did the same, in efforts to contain heart attacks and heart disease.

Officials recognized that the evidence was not conclusive when the guidelines were issued. The authors of the new report say it is a euphemism.

"Evidence has never been there," says James J. Dinicolantonio, Pharmd. He is a research scientist at the Heart Mid America Institute of St. Luke in the city of Kansas, Mo.

The new report echoes worries of other experts, says Steven Nissen, MD, president of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland clinic. He says that there must be important change in how doctors advise their patients in the diet. Nissen was not involved in the new report.

a look at the studies With his colleagues, Dinicolantonio searched for medical databases to find studies that would take recommendations. They found six relevant clinical trials that analyzed the relationship between dietary fat, cholesterol levels and heart disease.

At the time the guidelines were issued, the field of what is now known as "evidence-based medicine", was just beginning, says Vasan Ramachandran, MD. He is a professor of medicine at Boston University.
