Dairy Fat May Lower Diabetes Risk

Experts recommend avoiding high-fat dairy products to reduce the risk of diabetes, but a new study suggests that this advice may be wrong.

The researchers at Harvard School of Public Health say they identified a substance found mainly in dairy fat that seems to decrease the risk of type 2.

known as trans-palmitoleic acid, is present in the fat of ruminant animals such as cows, sheep and goats.

In Harvard's study, people with the highest levels of fatty acid in their blood have had a triple risk of lower risk of developing diabetes over time than people with lower levels.

They also had healthier HDL, or good, cholesterol levels, lower body fat and less insulin resistance.

But it is too early to change skim milk and low fat yogurt for upper fat versions.

The discoveries should be confirmed, they say that researchers say, and it is not clear whether trans-palmitoleic acid or a related compound was protective.

Harvard study was financed by subsidies from national health institutes. It appears in the December 21 issue of the Anais of Internal Medicine.

Dairy Fat May Lower Diabetes Risk

"If nothing else, I think we confirm that there is something in dairy products that reduces the risk of diabetes," Main researcher Dariush Mozaffian, MD, tells WebMD. "Or is this fatty acid or something associated with what we do not identify. It would be highly implausible that the relationship we saw is due to something unrelated to dairy."

The study included 3,736 participants in the national heart, lung and Institute of Blood (NHLBI) -Run Cardiovascular Health Study.

Throughout the study of two decades, the researchers measured the metabolic markers of the risk of diabetes, including the levels of fatty acids of circulating blood.

Larger blood levels of trans-palmitoleic acid at the entrance of the study were associated better cholesterol, less insulin resistance and less general inflammation, even after the researchers adjusted for other heart disease and diabetes risk factors.

More than 20 years of follow-up, participants with the highest levels of fatty acid had about 60% of less risk of developing diabetes than people with lower levels.

The discovery could explain the previous research, suggesting that people who eat more dairy products have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, says Mozaffian. .

Counseling to limit dairy fat Still brackets

in a news communication, co-author study Gokhan Hotamisligil, MD, PhD, notes that the next step will be Isolate fatty acid to test your ability to reduce the risk of diabetes in clinical trials.

"This is an extremely strong, stronger protective effect than other things we know can be beneficial against diabetes," says Hotamisligil at launch.

The American Association Diabetes (ADA) makes a clear distinction between healthy fats and unhealthy fats, and not surprisingly, Latricínea fat falls in the last category.

on your site, ADA recommends limiting saturated and trans fats, and the group identifies fat cheese, ice cream, butter, whole milk and 2% milk as foods to be limited by people with diabetes to reduce The risk of heart disease.

"instead of a cheese cane for an afternoon snack, have 12 almonds," Ada advises on your site. "The calories are almost the same, but you will have improved your heart health with that unique change."

Nutritionist Marion Franz, MS, RD, which serves in the strength task of Nutrition Ada, calls the Harvard discoveries "Interesting initial research", but says the recommendation to limit Milky's fat is still a good .

"This is an observational study that suggests a direction survey should enter," she says. "But we saw these studies before suggesting that a single micronutrient or food is protective and little arrived from it."

She says the connection between eating saturated fats and heart disease is well established. Several studies have also linked the consumption of saturated fat and total insulin resistance and diabetes.

"It is true that some studies have shown benefits for dairy foods in diabetes, but other studies show the same thing for the Mediterranean diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables and nuts, but low in dairy," says Is it over there.
